De merel praat niet meer
\nen in de moe-gebloeide tuinen
\nweegt nu het zaad ;
\nin ’t slepend ladgewaad
\nvan zware boomgaardkruinen
\nbloost nu het bol gelaat
\nvan zuiver ooft.
\nIk buig het hoofd :
\nik hoor den herfstwind loeien..
\nMaar is elk blad geteld
\nen ieder aar in ’t korenveld
\nherfstbloemen gloeien
\nmet den gloed van vuur
\nvan bloed en robijn ;
\nde druiven aan den muur
\nfonkelen rood als wijn.
\no Maak mij, nu het jaar haast vlood ,
\nmaak mij o herfst,
\ntot zon, voortijdlijk groot
\ndie in de kantelende vesten
\nvan ’t smeulend Westen
\nzwijmelt in ’t avondrood.

(1) “Sibylle Sambetha”, Memling, 1480: een gedetaillerde analyse vind je hier<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(“De XVIe eeuw heeft in haar \u00e9\u00e9n van de sibillen gezien, legendarische profetessen die de komst van de Verlosser voorspelden, doorgaans als jonge vrouwen voorgesteld<\/em>“).<\/p>\n
