Beste Simone,
\nIk hoop dat jullie na den \u201cromantischen\u201d (1) nacht goed zijn thuisgeraakt. Jammer dat dergelijke nachten moeten eindigen! Men hoorde z\u00f3 te kunnen voortleven: \u201cand so live ever\u2026\u201d Ken je Keats\u2019 heerlijk sonnet \u201cBright Star\u2026\u201d (2) Muziek in den koelen nacht, sterren en maan even boven de duistere bomen\u2026 het is een sfeer die met werkelijkheid schier niets te maken heeft en toch zo intens werkelijk is.
\nNu heeft de stilte van het alledaagse ons weer ingesloten \u2013 een stilte die luid roept hoe leeg zij is. En ik betrap mij erop dat ik zalig in het ijle zit te glimlachen. Na zoveel lijden en eenzaamheid (3) was de Kriekenberg (4) zo ongelooflijk schoon en verkwikkend. Laat ik het rechtuit bekennen: de zacht stille vriendschap die je mij hebt betuigd heeft mij goed gedaan. Ik ben gelukkig dat ik deze ogenblikken beleefd heb. Zij hebben voor mij weerom de diepe heimelijkheid der dingen ontsloten, het contact gelegd met de verborgenheden dewelke leed en wrok en kommer hadden overwoekerd. Nadat ze lang gezwegen hadden<\/span> (5) hoorde ik weer de zingende ziel der dingen (6), die jij, zo vernam ik gisteren voor het eerst, weleens hebt gehoord.
\nIk zal het op prijs stellen eens iets van jou hand te kunnen lezen. Stuur mij bij gelegenheid \u2019t een of \u2019t ander op.<\/p>\n

Commentaar<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

(1). Na den romantischen nacht<\/em>: Een verwijzing naar de dag ervoor en het tuinfeest in\u00a0Villa Kriekenberg <\/em>waar Nand en Sim elkaar voor het eerst ontmoetten (zie hierover de pagina “Het Tuinfeest<\/span><\/a>“).
\nBlijkbaar was de avond intiem ge\u00ebindigd, en Nand neemt onmiddellijk het initiatief om zich dit momentum niet te laten ontglippen.<\/p>\n

(2). Het gedicht van Keats, het citaat komt uit de laatste versregel:<\/p>\n

“It is unclear when Keats first drafted “Bright Star”; his biographers suggest different dates. Andrew Motion suggests it was begun in October 1819. Robert Gittings states that Keats began the poem in April 1818 \u2013 before he met his beloved Fanny Brawne \u2013 and he later revised it for her. Colvin believed it to have been in the last week of February 1819, immediately after their informal engagement.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The final version of the sonnet was copied into a volume of The Poetical Works of William Shakespeare, opposite Shakespeare’s poem, A Lover’s Complaint. The book had been given to Keats in 1819 by John Hamilton Reynolds. Joseph Severn maintained that the last draft was transcribed into the book in late September 1820 while they were aboard the ship Maria Crowther, travelling to Rome, from where the very sick Keats would never return. The book also contains one sonnet by his friend Reynolds and one by Severn. Keats probably gave the book to Joseph Severn in January 1821 before his death in February, aged 25. Severn believed that it was Keats’s last ever poem and that it had been composed especially for him.<\/em>
\nThe poem came to be forever associated with the “Bright Star” Fanny Brawne \u2013 with whom Keats became infatuated. Gittings says it was given as “a declaration of his love.”<\/em>
\nIt was officially published in 1838 in The Plymouth and Devonport Weekly Journal, 17 years after Keats’s death.”<\/em><\/p>\n

(3) “Na zoveel lijden en eenzaamheid…”: is een verwijzing naar de tijd die Nand doorbracht in gevangenschap (1944-1949) na zijn veroordeling voor collaboratie (zie uitgebreide info hierover in het website menu, voor de tenlaste legging, zie het hoofdstuk “Dossier Krijgsauditoraat<\/a><\/span>“).<\/span><\/p>\n

(4) “Kriekenberg”: een verwijzing naar “Villa Kriekenberg” in Sint-Martens-Latem, (Deurle aan de Leie), waar het tuinfeest<\/span><\/a> plaatsvond en de eerste ontmoeting van Nand en Simonne. De Villa bestaat nog steeds, maar is in priv\u00e9bezit. Zij werd gebouwd in 1934 door architect Andr\u00e9 Claessens<\/span><\/a>, informatie zie “Inventaris Onroerend Erfgoed<\/a>“.

(5) Nand verbetert in de uiteindelijke versie nog “hadden” naar “had”: zelf betrapte ik me ook op deze fout bij het nalezen en overtikken van deze brief: je hebt de neiging om “hadden” te zeggen\/schrijven, naar analogie met “der dingen”, maar “ze” verwijst naar: “de zingende ziel”, en niet naar “der dingen” dus enkelvoud. Een bewijs dat Nand zijn brieven zorgvuldig naleest.<\/p>\n
